Black Gold (2017) – hand-coloured screen print by Matthew Hindley

Represented by the Everard Read Gallery, Matthey Hindley (b. 1974) has held more than a dozen solo exhibitions in South Africa and abroad, including shows in Hungary, Switzerland and Germany. He has participated in the biennales of Venice, Beijing and Kochi (India); as well as numerous international group exhibitions; and his work is housed in the collections of the Vass László Gallery (Hungary) and the IZIKO South African National Gallery, among others.

Hindley’s works are luminous and poetic, and usually preoccupied with themes of destructive beauty, the aesthetics of violence and one’s simultaneous disengagement from and fascination with such reality. His current body of work draws imagery from civilian cell phone photographs sourced from Google images and social media news feeds – raw, low-res photos that resonate with Hindley’s painterly sensibility and thematic investigation of the real. Hindley is no stranger to printmaking, having explored both watercolour monotypes and copper plate drypoint with David Krut Projects in recent years – the experience of which has fed back into his approach to painting. Black Gold is Hindley’s first collaboration with 50ty/50ty.
