Cape Town Harbour _15h36_11.03.2017 (2017) – hand-pulled screen print by Katherine Bull

Katherine Bull (b. 1974) engages a range of mediums to draw attention to the act of representation itself; reflecting on notions of media theory such as the archive (the collection of historical knowledge and memory, a system once considered impartial). Combining painting, printmaking, performance and installation, she explores how we – both artist and viewer – see, understand and engage, within the current digital environment. Bull’s training in printmaking provided tangible means of reflecting on her relationship to media – the mediation of process, the uncertainty of the outcome, the deconstruction of perception demonstrated in colour separation  – and these aspects continue to feature in her multidisciplinary pieces. In nearly two decades of practice, she has accrued numerous accolades both locally and abroad, with international solo shows and residencies to her name. She also lectures part-time and facilitates creative coaching sessions.

For her 50ty//50ty artwork, Bull continues an investigation into how time-based media reflects in two-dimensional media. Her intriguing process involved rear projecting mobile phone video footage of the Cape Town Harbour onto drafting film, upon which she drew multiple layers, attempting to record the moving image. The drawings were translated into a four colour screen print bearing a title that references the archival practices.
