They live in deep time, in a way that we do not (2019) – hand-pulled screen print by Robyn Penn

The work of Robyn Penn (b.1973) revolves around the crisis of climate change, her love of the natural landscape and explorations of the sublime. This latter philosophical concept finds in her work contemporary and urgent iterations of its original 18th century definition, the dual experience of awe and anxiety in the face of incalculable greatness now also heightened by the threat of catastrophic change. Working meditatively across a range of mediums (painting, drawing, printmaking and sculpture), Penn is best known for imagery of clouds in their transitory, intangible glory, which reference what she describes as “the ever present moment, the idea of ‘now’”, and the certainty of uncertainty in an ever-changing world.

Her artwork for 50ty/50ty presents the moment when clouds lift and a mountain is revealed, if only briefly. Mountains contrast clouds with their permanence and display of the “slow workings of time”, and entrench the humbling perspective effected by the sublime, revealing human insignificance in the face of ancient stone.
Penn was awarded the Ampersand Fellowship, New York, in 2012 and has exhibited in Paris, New York and across South Africa.
