Twist-her swim’him time (2018) – hand-pulled screen print by Marlene Steyn

Marlene Steyn (b. 1989) uses a distinctive visual language that includes androgynous figures, fried eggs and hair braid-ropes to create surreal, intricately constructed worlds. Fleshy, fantastic and ambiguous, her work draws from themes of psychoanalytic theory, art historical narratives and popular culture, where objects and symbols combine and repeat to produce parallel realms both humorous and unsettling. Her work revels in overlaps and spatial uncertainty, diving in and out of mediums with a fluidity similar to the subjects she depicts; with paintings, sculpture, installation and performance conversing in a highly immersive experience.

Steyn wasted no time after completing her master’s degree at London’s prestigious Royal College of Art in 2014. In just four years she has accrued enviable achievements, including solo exhibitions in the UK, Belgium and South Africa and participation in numerous group shows and art fairs across the globe. She’s been awarded residencies in Israel, India, USA, Romania and Saudi Arabia, and has work housed in collections in the UK, China and Germany, as well as in Cape Town’s Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa (MOCAA).
