ETHORA (2026) – hand-pulled screen print by Kilmany-Jo Liversage

Kilmany-Jo Liversage (b. 1973) employs the vernacular of graffiti and street art to challenge, revise and reimagine art historical conventions of painting – in particular, Renaissance-era portraiture – while evoking a vision of the future. Within these blurred boundaries and fringe spaces, she demonstrates her mastery of compositional considerations of the Old Masters, simultaneously confronting the viewer with subject matter revolutionary to that Golden Age: Female subjects, traditionally passive, now return the gaze, unflinching and irreverent. Paint literally drips over established lines, and, as the artist elaborates, “defiant tags and graffiti gestures boldly reclaim the canvas, spray-painted layers explode in a psychedelic palette of luminous pinks, electric blues, fluorescent yellows, and vivid oranges”, this bold, sometimes jarring treatment charging and solidifying the undeniable presence of the female figures.

Liversage has held solo shows in London, Singapore and across South Africa, and exhibited in numerous international exhibitions and art fairs, including the Venice Biennale and SCOPE Art Show in Miami. In 2005 she was awarded the UNESCO Aschberg Bursary as well as the UNESCO Aschberg-Medellin Residency in Colombia. Her work is held in public and private collections across the globe.
