Frozen interval I & II (2017) – hand-pulled screen print by Jeanne Gaigher

Jeanne Gaigher (b. 1990) is an emerging artist whose mesmerising works of moody colour and half-imagined scenes have brought her swift critical acclaim. Formally trained in photography and printmaking, her current medium of choice is acrylic paint, with her daily photographs used as visual references for works on canvas and scrim, and even as canvases themselves.

“Painting emphasises the mythical quality of photography,” she explains; this allows her to translate ordinary encounters into fictive subjects and dreamlike scenes loosed from linear time. Unpredictability governs Gaigher’s process: She “wieg” (vacillates) between recorded moments, memories and even physical locations, working intermittently across several artworks at once, the diverse mediums unified by a colour palette of muted, dissolving hues. At this early stage of her career she has already held two solo shows and is currently participating in a group exhibition in Australia.

Gaigher’s piece for 50ty/50ty offers a further exploration of the above mentioned themes, and echoes a cinematic split-screen aesthetic that creates a dialogue between two seemingly disconnected images.
