Versameling / A collection of things (2018) – hand-pulled screen print by Stephané E. Conradie

Stephané Edith Conradie (b. 1990) is an artist and academic whose work explores a lifelong fascination with material culture in the home; the value ascribed to particular display objects and their role in identity formation and encoded situational and communal meaning. Focusing on coloured neighbourhoods, she investigates the creolised identities resulting from South Africa’s histories of colonialism, slavery, segregation and apartheid. The artist posits that the considered arrangements of exhibited items are more than merely aesthetic or commonplace; the domestic displays functioning as repositories of “nostalgic and ordentlike (respectable) sentiments of belonging” – an act of agency within a historical context of displacement and forced removals. She appropriates these items in an intriguing and distinct visual language within her printmaking and bricolage artworks.

Conradie held her debut solo show in 2017 and has participated in numerous group exhibitions across South Africa. Having receiving distinctions in both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees, she is currently pursuing her PhD in visual arts at Stellenbosch University, where she also lectures.
