Bruce Mackay (b. 1986) is a multidisciplinary visual artist and illustrator known for his intricate linework in pen and ink, with his linear forms and dynamic use of pattern anchored in a love of drawing and a background in design and hand-crafted typography. He relies on pared-down formal elements and a limited colour palette to compose artworks of an unexpected and mesmerising sense of depth, almost palpable despite their restricted dimensions. Referencing patterns in nature and invisible spirits, his work vacillates between order and chaos, both visually and thematically, with his diverse inspiration a seemingly haphazard list of found objects, and “mortality, resurrection, invisibility, quantum entanglement, science fiction, nature and turmoil”.
Mackay has participated in numerous group exhibitions in South Africa and had work published in many notable publications, including The New York Times and Juxtapoz.
