Chicala Forever

US $349.14

Angolan born Nelo Teixeira (b. 1975) creates collages, paintings, performances and installations out of mixed media, predominantly waste products collected among the rubble of Chicala. This Luandan neighbourhood where Teixeira once lived and worked has been largely demolished to make way for modern development, the remaining debris fundamental to the artist’s practice – in both subject and medium. Scraps of fabric, paper and hessian; wood and concrete detritus; as well as consumer waste from gentrified areas are torn, cut, juxtaposed and further worked with layers of acrylic paint, these repurposed found objects highlighting parallel narratives that challenge the powers that be. His subject matter speaks of the politics of space, of displacement and fragmentation, of personal and collective memories, of boundaries both physical and socio-political, with the dynamic vertical and horizontal dimensions of his installations suggesting the widespread cost to (razed) communities caused by so-called (sky-scraping) progress.

Now based in Lisbon, Portugal, Teixeira has exhibited extensively in group shows and art fairs across South Africa and in Luanda, Lisbon, Paris, Milan, London as well as the 2015 Venice Biennale. He also participated in a residency at South Africa’s AVA Gallery. Teixeira is represented by This is not a White Cube, with spaces in Lisbon, Portugal and Luanda, Angola.
