Swelter II (2019) – hand-pulled screen print by Alexia Vogel
Alexia Vogel (b.1991) is a graduate of Michaelis School of Fine Art. This young artist has been credited with injecting new life into landscape painting, with her nostalgic, dreamy paradises depicted in vivid colour combinations. Her imagery draws on old family photographs, but the landscapes portrayed are not strictly figurative: Her spontaneous, instinctive mark-making and thinned-down, free flowing oil paint serve to position scenes somewhere between the figurative and the abstract, the imagined and the captured.
Since receiving the Simon Gerson Prize in her final year of study (2013), her work has been exhibited at group exhibitions in London and Paris, as well as the FNB JoburgArtFair, the Cape Town Art Fair and the Sydney Contemporary international art fair. In June 2016, Vogel had her first international solo show at M Contemporary in Sydney, and in 2018 she was awarded a residency in Saint Émilion, France, which inspired her most recent solo show, Light Leak, in May of this year (2019).
