Ubuhle – Hand-pulled screen print by Aviwe Plaatjie (2024)
This artwork, titled Ubuhle (“beauty”), epitomises everything we love about the screen printing medium and the art of collaboration: a slower, more considered process requiring great care and attention; a mutualistic co-creation that can only result from connection and knowledge that grow over time. As such, you could say that Ubuhle began seven years ago, when we first met Plaatjie at one of our screen printing workshops, after which our conversations continued and concepts developed.
Aviwe Plaatjie (b. 1988) uses portraiture to chronicle the world around him, capturing his family, friends and neighbours in their everyday environments and encounters.
To date, Plaatjie has held two solo exhibitions at EBONY/CURATED and participated in numerous international group shows and art fairs – in the UK and the Netherlands as well as in France, South Korea, Portugal and Italy, where he is represented by Project 31. His work was also acquired by the Norval Foundation’s Homestead Collection in 2021.
