In between places with Ulriche Jantjes

Ulriche Jantjes is one of those emerging artists that you’ll want to keep your eye on. Her work is, quite simply, captivating, and demonstrates a beautiful, multi-layered engagement with her subjects, process, viewers and communities.

She’s also a dream to work with, with an enthusiastic professionalism that belies her years, and a creative process that parallels wonderfully with the screen printing medium. As an oil painter, Jantjes works – and thinks – in layers; her process is richly accumulative, much like the screen printing discipline.

This latest release, Saunter, saw Jantjes painting directly onto positives, drawing on landscape elements that inhabit her inner world, rather than any tangible, direct references. After exposing the screens, we tested various colour palettes and experimented with gradients, and eventually landed on this warm, nebulous artwork that somehow feels both weighted and ephemeral. It complements Jantjes’s oeuvre beautifully.
