The shadow of a (still) life

Emerging artist Adele van Heerden first graced our digital space with Homecoming – her contribution to our colour-in downloads project way back when we thought lockdown would only be three weeks long. Now, we’re thrilled to release her 50ty/50ty edition, titled Vanitas and inspired by the 17th century genre of the same name.

These rich, symbolic still lifes by the Dutch Masters focused on the transience of life, exhorting the viewer to consider their own mortality. Van Heerden’s take on this theme sees her intricate, layered floral beauties suspended against the deepest of black backgrounds – a combination of lightness and weight. It’s arresting, sobering and glorious. Do not miss out on this limited edition.
